Old Force Feedback joysticks LIVE AGAIN!!! I bought my Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick back in 1999/2000. As a teenager, I took great delight in holding the joystick sideways in awkward places, getting someone to hold it and guffawing as it's 'return to center' kicked in - nobody could ever work out how the joystick 'knew. TL:DR; x360ce is magic for vibration in your ancient joysticks, see Force Feedback under controller settings. Return to center works by default in Win7/Win8; this is about the haptic feedback / vibration. There might be other spell components at play; I dare not ask the bubbling cauldron for I like it this way.

I bought my Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 joystick back in 1999/2000. As a teenager, I took great delight in holding the joystick sideways in awkward places, getting someone to hold it and guffawing as it's 'return to center' kicked in - nobody could ever work out how the joystick 'knew' that it was being held, which made it all the more fun.

Windows dropped support for the joystick almost immediately afterwards - I was very disappointed that I couldn't even get basic driver support to get it working.

Windows 7 came out and it turned out basic driver support was there, but force feedback was dead and buried. It was never coming back. The joystick would never again simulate molasses; my joystick would never would never throb in anyone's hands again. Though return to center still worked, so I could still creep out my adult mates with the old trick.

I could use it in Battlefield for basic heli/jet flying, so I was happy enough, though I was very disappointed GTA didn't support it. I was very happy when I found x360ce and could still use my joystick for flying.

Then I moved from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and had to reconfigure everything - after which something strange happened.

I was playing GTA V yesterday and raising my landing gear when the joystick lurched in my hands. Distraught that my return to center feature must be dying for it to randomly spasm like that, I let go, held on again - no, the sensors were still working. I lowered my landing gear to land - and the joystick lurched again!

I couldn't believe it.

Nothing else seemed to trigger it besides landing gear - and then my right engine died and the joystick kicked with it.

I was so delighted that I was totally manly and didn't cry one tiny bit, no sirree, not one bit at all.

So, steps involved: I recently installed Windows 8.1 and brought over a GTA V install. I went through an inordinate amount of fussing attempting to use Wii drivers to get Wiimotes working (god knows what might be relevant for this magical spell, so I'm including it all). I'm using the X360ce emulator to make my joystick be simulated as an Xbox360 controller and have combined my controller with Scarlet Crush Productions service running for my PS4 controller, and 'enable Force Feedback' ticked in x360ce's advanced settings for the joystick.

None of these steps worked to restore Force Feedback in Windows 7 - I don't know what the difference is. I'm guessing it's just X360ce and maybe Windows 8.1 as well.

But I am beyond ecstatic that my ancient purchase from 15 years ago is finally restored to its former glory.

Now I just have to rewire a few of the buttons that have given up the ghost...
